Abstract

Construction projects frequently experience schedule deviations caused by various factors, including cash flow constraints, delays in material delivery, adverse weather conditions, and subjective activity duration estimates. Such delays often reduce project efficiency and increase labour costs, particularly in small-to-medium-scale residential construction projects where daily wage expenses are highly sensitive to project completion time. Therefore, an effective scheduling technique is required to identify critical activities and optimise project duration. This study aims to evaluate the draft scheduling plan for the construction of a Type 63 residential house (7 × 9 metres) located in Samarinda by applying the Critical Path Method (CPM). The research adopted a quantitative descriptive approach using project planning data obtained from construction documents and interviews with the project manager. Activity durations, predecessor relationships, and work sequences were organised into a hierarchical Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and analysed using Microsoft Project to develop the project network, perform forward pass and backward pass calculations, determine total float values, and identify the critical path. The analysis revealed a sequence of critical activities with a total float value of zero, indicating that any delay in these activities would directly affect the overall project completion time. The findings demonstrate that the construction project can be completed within an optimal duration of 90 calendar days. The integration of CPM with Microsoft Project effectively improves scheduling accuracy, minimises worker idle time, enhances operational management, and reduces the potential risk of labour cost overruns, thereby supporting more efficient construction project planning and control.
